Sequoia National Park at Sunset Three Rivers
If it’s snowing in Sequoia National Park, this town is just low enough in elevation that it’ll be raining in Three Rivers. Lodging, restaurants, groceries and most importantly, tire chains, are available here just before you enter the park.
Kings Canyon/Sequoia National Park
Located just north of Sequoia National Monument, Kings Canyon National Park borders the north end of Sequoia National Park. Visit the General Sherman Tree, the largest living tree in the world, located on the Congress Trail (Sequoia). Or, visit the General Grant Tree, the official Christmas tree for the nation, on the General Grant Tree Trail (Kings Canyon). Hit the trails on horseback from the Wolverton Pack Station (Sequoia). Drive through a fallen giant sequoia 0.9 miles from the General’s Highway via the Crescent Meadow Road (Sequoia). Hike down to Crystal Cave with icicle-like stalactites and mounds of stalagmites. Check the web site for other great ideas like the best vista points, scenic rides and forest walks.
Wuksachi Village and Lodge (within Sequoia National Park)
Now this is a surprise! While you can still find the typical burgers and hot dogs at the snack shop down the road, the restaurant serves delicious, gourmet meals all day. While you dine, you’ll be treated to the sights of the Sequoia forest outside the massive glass windows. The lodge is a short walk from the restaurant and offers very nice motel-style rooms. You can’t beat waking up to the crisp mountain air!
