Rafting down the Kern River

Whispering Pines Lodge KERNVILLE
If your goal is a short drive rewarded with tall pines, a roaring river, a view of the giant Sequoias and outdoor activities, Kernville can serve as your destination. Be sure to call ahead for reservations, because this is a popular area for Los Angeles residents seeking a different form of ‘wild life.’ In fact, Hollywood loves this area and has filmed some of your favorite programs here including Home Improvement, The Waltons, and MacGyver.

Grab some pans and try your hand searching for gold in lower Hogeye Gulch, located two miles northwest of the community of Lake Isabella, and about one quarter mile below State Road 155.
Whitewater Rafting
The Kern River offers some of the best whitewater rafting around and you can choose either a one-hour or a three-day trip. Minimum ages do apply, depending upon the water level, so call ahead. This web site offers several suggestions for outfitters.
Lake Isabella
Windsurfers love the typical 35-50 mph winds on Lake Isabella, so you’ll be treated to a beautiful display of color as you watch them traverse the lake. If this isn’t your thing, you’ll find jet skis and boats available to rent
Silver City Ghost Town
Open weekends in the summer months, you’ll enjoy walking around the twenty odd buildings that make up this make-believe town near Bodfish. In the 1960s and early 70s, buildings doomed for destruction were brought to this location and have been lovingly restored through the years. Although the buildings were originally located in Keysville, Whiskey Flat, old Isabella and other mining camps, many claim it is haunted today. Enter the old jailhouse and the Apalatea/Burlando House (a saloon and country store). The kids will love this visit back to the wild west days.
Whispering Pines Lodge
This is one of those places that will become your favorite spot to hide out and refresh, whether alone or with the kids. Choose a well-appointed cabin that sits on the bank high above the river and you can relax on your private porch while watching the rafters travel past. Take in an afternoon swim at the inn’s pool or try your hand at trout fishing after enjoying a hearty breakfast. Located about one hour south of the Trail of a Hundred Giants in Sequoia National Monument.
Trail of a Hundred Giants/Sequoia National Monument
The forest fires of 2002 just missed these giants and our deepest gratitude goes out to the firefighters responsible for saving this lush forested area. The largest tree in this stand is 20 feet in diameter and 220 feet high. This is an easy half-mile trail. It is located on Western Divide Highway just across the road from Redwood Meadow Campground and Trail of a Hundred Giants parking area.
