June Lake is to Mammoth as North Tahoe is to South Tahoe…a few miles, but worlds apart.
About six miles up the road from Mammoth is the quiet little town of June Lake. But don’t be fooled, because June Mountain has a vertical rise of 2,590 feet and is capable of transporting 10,000 riders an hour up the mountain. Thirty-five miles of named trails provide fun for beginner to intermediate skiers. And the scenery is phenomenal.
But it doesn’t stop there. Sitting at the base of a granite mountain is a posh resort,
The Double Eagle.
Cozy two-bedroom cabins are appointed with comfy pillows, thick comforters, fully equipped kitchens, outdoor grills and wood-burning fireplaces. Don’t let the cooking facilities intimidate you, because you can reserve them for popping corn at night. The high-ceilinged, rustically elegant restaurant is on hand to serve you. But here’s the best part: after sending the kids to play in the snow with dad, mom can head over to the unobtrusive building that hides one of the most indulgent spas in California. In fact, Forbes.com named the Double Eagle as one of the best in the world.
Take a family snowshoe hike, swim in the 60-foot indoor pool, soak in the hot tub, arrange for a dog sledding adventure, put on your ice skates and twirl around the pond, hit the cross-country ski trails or barrel down the mountain on skis or a snowboard. Too tame? Then try out ice climbing. You certainly won’t be bored in June Lake!
